Make sure the bike fits you properly and is in good working condition - your comfort is key in biking commuting, so just make sure you find a bike you think is comfortable to ride on.

Plan Your Route

If you live in a biking-friendly country such as Denmark, the Netherlands or another European city it is easy to find the right route as bike paths are everywhere. But if you live in a place where bike commenting is a rare transport, you might need to consider some careful planning.

Before you hit the road, figure out what routes are possible. Look for bike-friendly roads, bike lanes, or dedicated bike paths. Consider factors such as traffic volume, road conditions, and potential hazards. If possible, test out your route on a weekend to familiarize yourself with it before your first commute. Especially if you need to check your phone for directions, make sure you ride the route a few times to get the directions right so you won't have to hurry the first time you are biking to work.

Start Slow and Build Up

If you're new to biking, don't jump into long-distance commutes right away. Start with shorter rides to build up your fitness level and confidence and make sure to take the time you need.
